Point guard Jeremiah Francis will be transferring from UNC and entering his name in the transfer portal.
The freshman confirmed the decision to InsideCarolina on Thursday, leaving the UNC men’s basketball program after averaging 3.3 points and 1.6 assists per game in the 2019-2020 season.
Francis becomes the second UNC player to transfer this month, after junior forward Brandon Huffman announced his departure from the program on April 9. Francis has three years of collegiate eligibility left.
“Jeremiah’s a wonderful young man,” said UNC head coach Roy Williams in a release from the team. “Our players and coaches enjoyed him being part of our program. I truly admired the work he put in to get back on the court after two full seasons of being injured in high school. We wish him the best wherever he chooses to resume his career.”
Despite missing the Tar Heels first eight games while recovering from a left knee injury he suffered in high school, Francis made his debut against Virginia on December 8 and played increased minutes as the back-up point guard while starter Cole Anthony was injured.
The Reynoldsburg, Ohio native scored his season-high on December 21 against UCLA in the CBS Sports Classic, tallying 12 points off 9-10 free throw shooting.
Francis’ departure is the seventh transfer in 17 years of Williams’ head coaching tenure with UNC. Before Francis and Huffman, guard Seventh Woods was the most recent transfer, leaving the program after the 2018-2019 season.
