The Diamond Heels got some unfortunate news on Tuesday, as the program announced starting pitcher Jake Knapp would miss the entire 2024 season with a tear in the ulnar collateral ligament of his throwing arm. Knapp had been voted one of the team’s captains during the offseason.

“We are certainly going to miss Jake’s presence on the mound,” said head coach Scott Forbes, who implied Knapp was trending toward being the team’s top starter at the program’s media day earlier in January. “He worked extremely hard during the offseason and was poised to have a terrific senior season.”

In 2023, Knapp posted a 5-4 record with a 5.04 earned run average. His 16 starts were tied for most in the ACC.

“Jake will still be with us at practice, in the dugout and on road trips,” Forbes said. “He’s one of our captains and leaders and will be a vital part of our team this year.”

Carolina will begin its 2024 season when it hosts Wagner for a three-game series at Boshamer Stadium. Opening Day is scheduled for Friday, February 16 at 4 p.m.
