The No. 23 UNC men’s tennis team earned a pair of dominant victories Wednesday afternoon and evening in Chapel Hill, sweeping both Wofford and NC Central to move to 4-1 in 2022.

In the opener against the Terriers, UNC earned the critical doubles point with victories from the Mac Kiger/Brian Cernoch and Logan Zapp/Casey Kania pairs. Cernoch, Kiger and Zapp would each earn singles wins as well, with Cernoch taking a first-to-10 third-set tiebreaker after dropping the second set in his match. Zapp had to work hard for his win, gutting out a 10-8 first-set tiebreaker before taking the second set, 6-2.

The nightcap against NC Central wasn’t nearly as competitive. Henry Lieberman and Benjamin Sigouin helped UNC once again clinch the doubles point, before the Tar Heels ran wild in the singles portion of the match. Every Carolina player won in straight sets, with no man dropping more than three games in a single set. Cernoch, Sigouin, Anuj Watane and Peter Murphy each earned 6-0 set victories, with Watane taking both sets by that score.

Carolina’s next match should be much more challenging. The No. 13 South Carolina Gamecocks will visit Chapel Hill on February 13. UNC took two wins over South Carolina in 2021.
