Carolina bounced back from its first loss of the season to cruise past visiting College of Charleston by a 3-0 score at Dorrance Field on Tuesday night.

Freshman defender Tate Johnson scored the first goal of his collegiate career just 8:38 into the match, pouncing on a loose ball in the box and sliding into the side netting for a 1-0 Carolina lead. Martin Vician scored his eighth goal of the season 15 minutes later to double the advantage, knocking home a rebound after teammate Luke Hille had sent a shot at the Charleston net.

The 2-0 lead stood until the 87th minute, when freshman Bertil Hansen scored off a Vician assist. Like Johnson’s in the first half, it was Hansen’s first collegiate goal.

Carolina dominated possession all night, outshooting the Cougars 12-1 in the first half, 21-3 overall and 13-2 in shots on goal. The Tar Heels took eight corner kicks to just two from Charleston. UNC goalkeeper Andrew Cordes made a pair of saves to earn his sixth clean sheet of the season.

The win improves No. 7 Carolina to 7-1-3 on the season. The Tar Heels are still undefeated at home, sporting a 5-0-3 mark at Dorrance Field. UNC’s next two contests are both on the road, though, with the first coming at Notre Dame on Friday at 7 p.m.
