The UNC men’s soccer team got back in the win column Tuesday night at Dorrance Field, defeating visiting East Tennessee State, 1-0.

Freshman Sam Williams scored the first goal of his collegiate career in the 52nd minute, and it was all the Tar Heels would need to secure the victory. It was one of 10 shots Carolina took on the night, compared to just five from ETSU.

Though UNC controlled possession throughout the match, the Tar Heels did have a scare late in the second half. In the 68th minute, ETSU’s Gabriel Ramos laced a shot which was headed for the bottom corner of the UNC net, but goalkeeper Andrew Cordes went to ground to make the difficult save. Cordes made three saves on the night and kept his second clean sheet of the season in the process.

Carolina’s win snapped a brief, two-match losing streak and moved the team to 3-2 on the season. Its five-match homestand to begin the year is now over, and the team’s next match is a difficult one: a visit to Durham and the No. 5 Blue Devils, who are undefeated this season. That match will kick off Friday night at 7 p.m.
