In front of a record-setting crowd at NC State’s Dail Soccer Field, UNC held firm against the No. 5 Wolfpack and earned a scoreless draw to begin ACC play.

Carolina goalkeeper Andrew Cordes made a season-high seven saves on the night, including one in the 88th minute to stop NC State’s last, best chance of the match and preserve the 0-0 score. Cordes’ seven saves were one shy of tying a career high for the senior.

The Wolfpack did find the back of the net once against Cordes in the 25th minute to cap off a counterattack, but the goal was ruled offsides. NC State challenged Cordes three more times in the final 20 minutes of the first half but were turned away each time. Bertil Rygaard Hansen and Ryan Dugan were responsible for UNC’s only two shots on target of the night, both of which came in the first half. Overall, NC State held a 15-8 edge in overall shots and 7-2 advantage in shots on goal.

The match is UNC’s second shutout in five matches this season. The Tar Heels are now 3-1-1 overall this season and 0-0-1 in ACC play. Carolina will return to the pitch next Friday, September 12 when it hosts No. 7 Wake Forest at Dorrance Field.
