Five fourth-quarter goals from Ohio State propelled them past the upset-minded UNC men’s lacrosse team Sunday in Columbus, as the Tar Heels dropped their first game of the season, 8-5.

The Tar Heels held a 4-2 halftime lead in the low-scoring contest, but only managed one goal in the second half as Ohio State made its move. It wasn’t for a lack of trying, though; UNC outshot the Buckeyes 42-32 and sent seven shots on goal in the second half. No Tar Heel scored multiple goals: Logan McGovern, Johnny Schwarz, Sean Goldsmith, Paul Barton and Ty English each scored once.

In net, goalie Collin Krieg made 13 saves and has now recorded at least 10 in all three games this season. But his eight goals allowed were also the most in the young campaign. The five goals allowed in the fourth quarter were the most in any quarter by Carolina this year.

Despite the loss, Carolina still rose seven spots in the newest Inside Lacrosse poll by virtue of its win at Johns Hopkins last Tuesday. UNC is currently ranked No. 12, and will make another difficult road trip next weekend when it visits No. 19 Syracuse. That game is scheduled for 3 p.m. and will be broadcast on ACC Network.
