A halftime deficit couldn’t hold the Tar Heels down for long.

The UNC men’s lacrosse team overcame a 6-3 halftime hole at No. 6 Johns Hopkins Tuesday evening by outscoring the Blue Jays 8-1 in the second half, earning its second win of the season in the process. With the win, Carolina has already matched its amount of road victories from the 2022 season: one.

After its quiet first half, the UNC offense roared back to life in the second. A pair of goals from senior midfielder P.J. Zinsner, plus another from graduate transfer Henry Wellford, got the Tar Heels back within a goal by the start of the fourth. And in the final period, it was all Tar Heels.

Sophomore Antonio DeMarco scored just 1:06 into the quarter to tie the game, and Logan McGovern scored five minutes later to give Carolina its first lead of the night. DeMarco scored once more in the final period, along with Sean Goldsmith and Dewey Egan as the Tar Heels pulled away and ended up winning the game comfortably. Carolina outshot the Blue Jays 44-32 on the night.

UNC only allowed a single goal in the second half, already the second time this season the Tar Heel defense has allowed one goal in a full half. Goalie Collin Krieg made 14 saves, including one at point-blank range while Carolina’s comeback effort was in progress.

The Tar Heels also held the Blue Jays to 0-3 on man-up opportunities.

The impressive result moves Carolina to 2-0 on the young season, with two more difficult road games to come before the team returns home. Up next is a visit to No. 6 Ohio State (the Buckeyes were tied with Hopkins in the latest poll), who throttled UNC at Dorrance Field last season. This season’s game is scheduled for 12 p.m. on Sunday.
