The No. 9 UNC men’s lacrosse team’s first road trip of season was a short one, and the Tar Heels emerged victorious in a hard-fought game. Carolina visited High Point on Sunday and came away with a 14-12 win.

Star attackman Chris Gray scored four goals in the contest, including two in a back-and-forth first quarter which saw the Tar Heels erase an early 2-0 deficit. Freshman midfielder Antonio DeMarco scored his first two goals of the season in the second quarter, the second of which gave Carolina its first lead of the day at 6-5.

UNC took an 8-6 lead early in the third quarter on freshman defender Paul Barton’s first goal of the season, but saw that lead disappear to the tune of a 3-0 run from the Panthers. The Tar Heels quickly seized control of the game after that, answering the 3-0 run with a 6-0 run of their own across the third and fourth quarters. Two consecutive goals from Gray within 28 seconds of each other punctuated the run, giving Carolina a 14-9 lead it wouldn’t relinquish.

Gray led the team in points with four, while four Tar Heels tied with three points apiece. Sophomore midfielder Cole Herbert collected his second hat trick of the season, while senior attackman Nicky Solomon dished out a team-high three assists.

The 6-2 Tar Heels will have one more non-conference matchup before beginning ACC play in earnest next week. The Tar Heels will host Bellarmine at Dorrance Field this Saturday at 3 p.m., before hosting No. 12 Duke the next weekend.
