The Tar Heels are going dancing.

Carolina earned the No. 1 seed in the West Region of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday. It’s UNC’s 18th time as a No. 1 seed in program history, the most of any Division 1 school. UNC will face the winner of No. 16 seeds Howard and Wagner in the first round in Charlotte on Thursday at 2:45 p.m. Those two teams will meet in the First Four on Tuesday in Dayton, OH.

“I’m really excited for the guys,” said head coach Hubert Davis. “We’re a No. 1 seed because of the work this team has done this season. I’m proud of how they have worked all season, how they’ve played, how they have prepared and how from the start of the season they have wanted to be a team.”

The Tar Heels won the outright ACC regular-season championship and enter the NCAA Tournament with a 27-7 overall record. Carolina earned nine Quad 1 and seven Quad 2 victories on the season. Its 16 combined Quad 1 and 2 victories are tied with Iowa State for fourth-most in the country.

UNC is one of five ACC schools to reach the tournament. Duke earned a No. 4 seed in the South Region, Clemson is No. 6 in the West with UNC, Virginia is a No. 10 in the Midwest and will play in the First Four, and ACC Tournament champion NC State is No. 11 in the South.

Also in the West Region with Carolina are No. 2 seed Arizona, No. 3 seed Baylor and No. 4 seed Alabama. If UNC were to win in the first round, it would face the winner of No. 8 seed Mississippi State and No. 9 seed Michigan State in the second round. The No. 2 Wildcats, of course, have former UNC standout and reigning Pac-12 Player of the Year Caleb Love.
