UNC men’s and women’s tennis each earned victories in the quarterfinals of the ACC Championships on Friday.

The men’s team was up first, as the No. 3 seed in Rome, Georgia. Facing the No. 6-seeded NC State Wolfpack for the third time this season, the Tar Heels grabbed the doubles point to begin the action.

From there, Carolina got off to a hot start in singles play. Logan Zapp and Benjamin Sigouin won their respective matches to put UNC up 3-0. But NC State then won three consecutive singles matches to tie the score.

That means it came down to the No. 1 singles match between Carolina’s Brian Cernoch and NC State’s Rafa Izquierdo Luque. The players went three long sets, with Cernoch winning the clincher by rallying and taking six straight games. The final score was 7-6 (7-3), 6-7 (5-7) and 6-3 in favor of the Tar Heels’ top-ranked player.

The No. 1 UNC women’s tennis team saw Friday unfold a little differently. The top-ranked team in the nation dropped its doubles point against No. 8 Florida State after the Carolina duo of Elizabeth Scotty and Fiona Crawley were upset in their match.

But in singles play, Crawley, Scotty, Anika Yarlagadda and Reilly Tran each claimed quick victories to put away the Seminoles and advance to the semifinals.

On the men’s side, Carolina will now face an upset-minded Georgia Tech team Saturday morning. The No. 10 seed Yellow Jackets upset the No. 2 seed Wake Forest on Friday. Meanwhile, the women’s tennis program will match up with No. 4 Virginia, who are ranked seventh in the country. Men’s play gets underway at 10 a.m. in Rome, while the women’s programs will start at 2 p.m.
