Following UNC’s 35-28 win at Georgia State last weekend, junior linebacker Cedric Gray and freshman running back Omarion Hampton were named ACC Linebacker and Rookie of the Week on Tuesday.

Against the Panthers, Gray amassed a career-high-tying 14 tackles, including a critical stop on Georgia State’s final 3rd down of the game which forced them to punt. It was one of his two tackles for loss on the day. Gray is tied for the team lead with 19 solo tackles this season and is the sole team leader with 34 total tackles.

Hampton, a true freshman from Clayton, N.C., scored two touchdowns in the second half to help Carolina overcome a 28-21 deficit. Hampton has scored at least once in each of UNC’s three games and has five touchdowns this season. The Georgia State game also marked the second 100-yard effort of Hampton’s young career, after he rushed for 101 yards in the opener against Florida A&M. He is the overall team leader in both rushing yards and rushing touchdowns.

Gray, Hampton and the Tar Heels are currently in a bye week and will be back in action on Saturday, September 24 against Notre Dame in Chapel Hill. That game is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. and will be broadcast either on ABC or ESPN. The Fighting Irish were ranked in the preseason top 5, but have since fallen out of the poll entirely after an 0-2 start.
