It was a good weekend at the home office for both of the UNC lacrosse teams, as the men and women picked up wins at Dorrance Field on Saturday. The No. 1-ranked women’s team handled No. 25 Virginia Tech with ease, 20-8, while the No. 9 men’s team used a massive fourth quarter to rally past Bellarmine.

The women’s team once again found themselves trailing in the first quarter, down 2-1 after a Hokie goal with 2:40 on the clock. And once again, the Tar Heels answered in full force, using an 8-0 run over the next 13 minutes to take away any hopes of an upset. Scottie Rose Growney put together a hat trick in the run, scoring the first two goals within three minutes and then adding her third five minutes later. All three of Growney’s goals were unassisted.

Jamie Ortega waited until the second half to find the score sheet, but like Growney, she earned yet another hat trick in rapid fashion. Ortega scored all three of her goals in a span of 8:21 in the third quarter, keeping the Hokies at bay and extending her goal streak to 45 consecutive games. Three other Tar Heels scored hat tricks: Ally Mastroianni, Caitlyn Wurzburger and Brooklyn Neuman. Neuman, a senior midfielder from Rockford, MI, had only scored two goals all season before her outburst on Saturday.

The win was Carolina’s 37th consecutive regular season victory, and the 28th consecutive victory at home. The Tar Heels are now 11-0 on the season, and will welcome in No. 15 Notre Dame to Dorrance Field next Saturday at 11 a.m.

The men’s lacrosse team had to sweat out its win against Bellarmine. The Tar Heels trailed 6-4 at halftime and 8-7 after the third quarter, but ended up winning the game going away, courtesy of an 8-0 fourth quarter run. The final score of a competitive game showed a comfortable 15-8 result.

After the Knights scored twice within the final 1:18 of the third quarter to take that 8-7 lead, Carolina came out with guns blazing in the fourth. Nicky Solomon netted his second goal of the day to even the score at 8-8, before star attackman Chris Gray scored the first two of his three fourth-quarter goals to put the Tar Heels in front. It was another spectacular day for Gray, who finished with five goals and three assists for a team-high eight points. Solomon was second on the team with four.

It was Solomon who scored the Tar Heels’ fourth goal of the quarter, before Harrison Schertzinger, Lance Tillman, Gray and Ryan Levy each found the back of the net to finish the Knights off.

“It’s always great to contribute on the offensive side of the ball,” Gray said. “The best part about our offense is that each game it’s a different guy, but today it happened to be me. At the end of the day, it’s just a product of the system we play.”

The Tar Heels are now done with their non-conference schedule for the regular season. Their next matchup is a big one: a home date with No. 10 Duke Saturday at Dorrance Field at 2 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ACC Network.
