The UNC men’s and women’s lacrosse teams each earned wins on Saturday.

The men’s team took on Fairfield in a neutral-site game in Maryland. After a closely-contested first quarter, the Tar Heels blew the game open with a 5-0 run in the second quarter, two of which came from Dominic Pietramala. That momentum continued in the second half, as the Tar Heels outscored the Stags in the third quarter to put the game on ice.

Pietramala finished with a game-high five goals, while Logan McGovern and Owen Duffy each contributed hat tricks.

The Tar Heels are now 2-0 on the young season. The team will be back in action when they host Johns Hopkins in the home opener on February 24 at noon.

Meanwhile, the women’s team picked up a ranked win by defeating No. 12 Florida 19-10. Carolina entered halftime tied with the Gators 8-8, but trailed for much of the first half. Florida led 7-4 midway through the second quarter and 8-6 with less than three minutes remaining, but goals from GraceAnn Leonard and Caitlyn Wurzburger in a span of 37 seconds tied the game and gave the Tar Heels the momentum.

It was all Carolina in the second half, as UNC took the lead 1:09 into the third quarter and never looked back. With the score sitting at 10-9 Tar Heels midway through the third, UNC scored five straight goals to put the game on ice. The team added four more in the final five minutes for good measure.

Kiley Mottice, Alyssa Long, Eva Ingrilli and Wurzburger each recorded hat tricks. In goal, Alecia Nicholas played all 60 minutes and made seven saves.

The No. 6 Tar Heels are now 2-1 and will be back in action on February 23 when they visit No. 16 Virginia to open ACC play. The game is scheduled for 5 p.m. in Charlottesville.
