Head coach Hubert Davis and the UNC men’s basketball program have agreed to a two-year contract extension which will keep Davis in Chapel Hill through 2030. The two parties initially agreed to the extension in the summer of 2024 and signed the deal in December.
Under the terms of the new deal, Davis’ base salary will be $1.25 million, a significant increase from the $400,000 base salary under his previous contract. His supplemental income will steadily increase over the life of the contract, rising $100,000 each year – starting at $1.7 million this season and ending at $2.2 million in the contract’s final year. These figures do not include performance benefits, such as a potential $250,000 payout should UNC win a national championship.
This is the second contract extension Davis has signed since becoming head coach before the 2021-22 season. Davis signed an extension following that first season – which saw Carolina reach the national championship game.
Since then, Davis’ tenure has seen both ups and downs. The 2022-23 season began with UNC ranked as the preseason No. 1 team in the AP Poll, but ended with the Tar Heels missing the NCAA Tournament, becoming the first ever preseason No. 1 to experience such a fall from grace.
The Tar Heels rebounded with a strong 2023-24 season, winning the ACC regular-season title and earning a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2019. Davis won ACC Coach of the Year honors and guard R.J. Davis was named ACC Player of the Year.
The 2024-25 campaign has been another bumpy one for Davis and his program, as most projections have the Tar Heels (18-11, 11-6 in ACC play) missing the NCAA Tournament once again. Ironically, the day both Davis and athletic director Bubba Cunningham signed the two-year extension (December 4, 2024), UNC lost at home to Alabama in the ACC-SEC Challenge. The signing also occurred exactly one week before UNC announced the hiring of new head football coach Bill Belichick.
The announcement of the extension comes the same day as the men’s basketball program announced the hiring of Jim Tanner as its first ever executive director and general manager.
