The Tar Heels will end the season where it started three months ago.

Carolina earned a bid to the Duke’s Mayo Bowl in Charlotte, where it will face West Virginia. The game is scheduled for December 27.

“We’re excited to be headed to Charlotte to play in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl,” said UNC head coach Mack Brown. “We’re looking forward to diving into bowl practice, heading to Charlotte, and taking on a tough West Virginia team later this month.”

UNC finished the season at 8-4 overall and 4-4 in the ACC, despite a 6-0 start. It’s still unknown whether stars such as Drake Maye, Cedric Gray and Tez Walker will play in the game, as all three could elect to sit out and prepare for the NFL Draft. Gray has confirmed this season will be his last in Chapel Hill, but Maye and Walker have made no such announcements.

West Virginia enters the game with an identical 8-4 overall record and a 6-3 mark in Big 12 play. The Mountaineers have already beaten one ACC team this season, defeating Pitt 17-6 in the “Backyard Brawl” on September 16.

Carolina and West Virginia have only met twice before, both in bowl games. The most recent meeting also came in Charlotte at the Meineke Car Care Bowl, when the Mountaineers won 31-30 on the strength of a go-ahead touchdown pass midway through the fourth quarter. The only other meeting between the two schools came on New Year’s Day in 1997, when Carolina won 20-13 in the Gator Bowl.
