This series of posts will be made weekly on Chapelboro to help inform our community about local government meetings. All meeting days, locations and times may be subject to change. Check town, county, and school district websites for additional information.
This week is all about personnel: Orange, Chatham, and Durham county commissioners will all elect new chairs (or re-elect old ones), and Carrboro will swear in a new mayor and two new Town Council members. Beyond that, the most interesting agenda item may be in Durham, where county commissioners will take a long look at the future of the RTP – including a proposed “social district” at the Hub on Route 54 and Davis Drive, which RTP officials are hoping to turn into a social/cultural destination.
Here’s a rundown of local government meetings this week in Durham, Orange, and Chatham Counties.
Orange County
Orange County Commissioners meet Monday, December 4, at 7 p.m. in the Whitted Building. Commissioners will elect a chair and vice-chair for next year and get an update on capital needs for Orange County Schools. Click here for the full agenda.
The Carrboro Town Council meets at 7 p.m. Tuesday, December 5. Catherine Fray and Jason Merrill will be sworn in as new board members and Barbara Foushee will take the oath of office as Carrboro’s new mayor; council members will also discuss how to fill the Council seat left vacant by Foushee’s election. The Chapel Hill Town Council does not meet this week, but town advisory boards and commissions have all been invited to join Chapel Hill Transit on Tuesday, December 5, to get a look at proposed station designs for the town’s future Bus Rapid Transit line. That open house will take place from 5:30-7:30 at the Chapel Hill Public Library; members of the public are invited as well. Click here for more information.
Chatham and Durham Counties
Chatham County Commissioners meet at 6 p.m. Monday, December 4. After electing a chair and vice-chair, commissioners will receive a State of the County presentation from county manager Dan LaMontagne. Click here for a link to the agenda.
The Pittsboro town board does not have a regular meeting this week, but the board will hold a special meeting at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, December 6, to look ahead at budget plans for the 2025 fiscal year. Get the full agenda at this link.
Durham County Commissioners are holding a work session at 9 a.m. Monday, December 4. After electing a chair and vice-chair, commissioners will get a presentation on the future of the RTP including a proposed “social district” allowing outdoor alcohol consumption around Hub RTP near the corner of Highway 54 and Davis Drive. Click here for the full agenda.
The Durham City Council is scheduled to meet twice this week, first on Monday, December 4, and then on Thursday, December 7. Monday’s agenda is not available on the city’s website, but Thursday’s work session (starting at 1 p.m.) will include a comprehensive financial report from the 2023 fiscal year.
