Looking to put a disappointing 2021 season behind it, the UNC football program announced its full regular season schedule for 2022 on Monday night.

The Tar Heels will begin the season a week early in August, in what is commonly known around college football as “Week Zero.” As a result of playing the game early, Carolina will have two bye weeks during the season, as opposed to one.

UNC will kick things off against Florida A&M on Saturday, August 27 in Kenan Stadium. It will be the first-ever meeting between the two programs, and Carolina’s first game against an HBCU since hosting North Carolina A&T in 2015.

Carolina will then travel up to Boone to play Appalachian State the following week. It’s the first meeting between the Tar Heels and Mountaineers since ASU’s win in Kenan Stadium in 2019, and part of a three-game series between the two schools. The team will stay on the road for its next game at Georgia State, who Carolina soundly defeated in 2021.

After the team’s first bye week, Notre Dame will visit Kenan Stadium on Saturday, September 24. UNC will be looking for just its second all-time victory against the Fighting Irish.

Virginia Tech visits Chapel Hill the next weekend to open up conference play for Carolina, followed by consecutive road trips to Miami and Duke before the Tar Heels’ second bye week. UNC will then host Pitt, looking to snap a brief, two-game losing streak to the Panthers, before hitting the road again for matchups with Virginia and Wake Forest. Unlike previous seasons, Carolina’s game with the Demon Deacons will count as a conference game for both teams.

The Tar Heels will then host Georgia Tech on Saturday, November 19, before celebrating Senior Day against NC State on Friday, November 25, the day after Thanksgiving. UNC will be looking to avenge embarrassing defeats to both the Yellow Jackets and Wolfpack in 2021.

As part of the program’s schedule release, the official Carolina Football Twitter account engaged in some good-natured ribbing when announcing its opponents, including particularly well-received jabs against Notre Dame, Miami and Duke.

No official kick-off times have been announced for any of the games as of Monday night.
