The UNC field hockey team pushed its winning streak to six games with weekend victories at No. 17 Wake Forest and at home against Appalachian State. The two wins came by a combined 9-1 margin. Carolina has only allowed three goals over its winning streak after giving up five in the first two games.

Friday’s matchup at the Demon Deacons was a defensive struggle for most of the evening, with Katie Dixon’s goal in the second quarter standing as the only dent on the scoreboard. Wake Forest kept UNC’s defense honest, forcing six saves out of Tar Heel goalie Maddie Kahn, including three in the third quarter. Carolina was finally able to find insurance inside the final two minutes, as Jasmina Smolenaars scored her first goal of the season to double the lead. Pleun Lammers added a third UNC goal just 19 seconds later to put the game on ice. The 3-0 win is Carolina’s 13th consecutive win against Wake Forest.

UNC had no trouble finding the back of the cage against the Mountaineers on Sunday, scoring three goals in both the first and second quarters to take a commanding lead by halftime. Freshman Sanne Hak scored her first two goals as a Tar Heel as part of the onslaught, while Kiersten Thomassey, Charly Bruder and Ryleigh Heck (twice) each also put their names in the scoresheet. Bruder’s five goals are the most on the team through eight games.

No. 2 Carolina will take its 7-1 record into a road matchup at St. Joseph’s in Philadelphia next Sunday.
