Carolina left no doubt in the opening round of the ACC Tournament on Tuesday morning in Winston-Salem, cruising past Cal 5-0 to advance to the conference semifinals on Wednesday.

First team All-ACC honoree Charly Bruder scored the opening goal just 53 seconds into the game, setting the tone for the blowout to come. Bruder scored again early in the second quarter to double the lead, and Sanne Hak added Carolina’s third shortly before halftime.

The score stayed 3-0 until the fourth quarter, when Avery Donahue and Hope Haynes put the finishing touches on the blowout win. It was the first collegiate goal for Haynes, a redshirt freshman from Texas.

The Tar Heels held a decisive 30-2 advantage in total shots, including a 13-1 edge in shots on target. Carolina also earned 11 penalty corners to Cal’s three. UNC goalie Abigail Taylor stopped Cal’s only shot on target to secure the Tar Heels’ 10th shutout of the 2024 season.

Carolina is now 16-0 on the season. Tuesday’s win advances UNC through to the semifinal round, which will be played on Wednesday against No. 5 seed Syracuse.
