The Department of Transportation has reinstalled the UNC championship sign along I-40 commemorating the Tar Heels’ 2017 men’s basketball national title.

The sign was installed earlier this year and it did not take long for fans of rival programs to take notice.

Because of its proximity to PNC Arena, home to NC State’s basketball team, Wolfpack fans took to social media to lobby for the sign’s removal. Shortly afterwards, the sign was removed from its original location.

The sign was later found further along I-40 with red and black spray paint on it.

According to WRAL Sports Fan, the DOT has reinstalled the sign about 2 miles from its original location. Officials hope that the new location will dissuade future vandalism attempts.

This program for championship signs around the state is a recent addition by the Department of Transportation. To qualify, the university must win a national championship in a sport recognized by the NCAA. The cost per sign, paid by the school, is $2000, according to state officials, and it only remains up for two years.
