The Diamond Heels’ struggles at the plate continued Wednesday evening in a 5-1 loss to UConn at Boshamer Stadium. It’s the team’s third loss in its last four games after dropping a series at Louisville the previous weekend.

Kane Kepley gave Carolina an early lead with a leadoff home run in the bottom of the first, but that would be UNC’s only dent in the scoreboard for the day. The Huskies promptly took the lead against starting pitcher Cameron Padgett with two runs in the top of the second, then added three more against the Carolina bullpen in the third to pad the lead.

UNC would threaten in the late stages of the game, loading the bases and bringing the tying run to the plate in the form of Alex Madera in the bottom of the eighth inning, but Madera would ground out on the first pitch of the at-bat to end the frame. Carolina hitters managed just six hits on the night, two of which came from Kepley. The Liberty transfer is now batting .354 this season.

UNC has been outscored 10-1 in its last two losses. The Diamond Heels are 16-5 overall and just 4-5 in their last nine games following a 12-0 start and sit at 2-4 in ACC play after two series. The team’s three home losses this season already equal the total from the entirety of 2024. Carolina will be back at it when it visits Boston College for a three-game weekend series, with the first game scheduled for Friday at 3 p.m.
