Despite rebounding from their first loss of the season with a comfortable win Saturday, the Diamond Heels fell to visiting Stanford in Sunday’s rubber match at Boshamer Stadium. It’s the first time UNC has lost a three-game series this season and the first time it has lost a series at home since 2023.

Carolina’s only win in the series came in a blowout, as UNC beat the Cardinal 11-1 Saturday in a game which ended in the bottom of the seventh inning due to the 10-run rule. Starting pitcher Jake Knapp went all seven innings for Carolina, allowing only four hits and striking out seven Stanford batters. At the plate, UNC scored in six of seven innings, including a four-run fourth to break the game open and a three-run seventh to end it. Luke Stevenson finished 4-4 with two titanic home runs, including a 448-foot blast which landed in Karen Shelton Stadium beyond the right field wall.

Unfortunately for UNC, none of that offense carried over into Sunday’s series finale. The Carolina bats managed just six hits against a stingy Cardinal staff and failed to score for the first time this season. UNC pitcher Aidan Haugh allowed only two runs in five innings of work but was dealt the loss as Carolina fell 7-0. All of Stanford’s runs came in the final five innings.

The Diamond Heels are 14-2 overall and 1-2 in ACC play. The coming week sees them on the road for four straight games, with the first coming at UNC-Wilmington Tuesday night at 6 p.m.
