Virginia Tech scored five runs against UNC starter Aidan Haugh in the first inning Saturday, putting the Diamond Heels in a hole they couldn’t climb out of in a 10-6 loss.

The Hokies’ opening salvo included three home runs in the span of four batters, and their five runs in the first inning alone were more than Haugh had given up in any of his previous starts all season long. Virginia Tech added another home run in the second inning to answer a three-run top of the frame from UNC.

Carolina never led, cutting the deficit to 7-5 in the seventh inning but then allowing the Hokies to score three runs across the seventh and eighth innings. Virginia Tech’s last two runs came on its fourth home run of the afternoon.

Haugh was dealt the loss after recording just five outs and allowing seven runs – more than he’d given up in his previous four starts combined. Kane Kepley, Luke Stevenson, Jackson Van De Brake and Alex Madera all picked up RBIs on the day, though the Diamond Heels spoiled their best chance to make headway in the top of the eighth after advancing runners to second and third with one out. A strikeout and a groundout ended the threat.

The loss snapped what had been a seven-game winning streak for UNC. The Diamond Heels are now 30-9 overall and 12-8 in ACC play. The series’ rubber match is scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m.

Here's the Complete Bracket for the 2025 ACC Baseball Tournament
The ACC Baseball Tournament returns to Durham Bulls Athletic Park in downtown Durham this week. The tournament will begin Tuesday, May 20 and conclude Sunday, May 25.
