The Diamond Heels won for the second straight night at Boshamer Stadium Wednesday, taking down Winthrop by a 7-3 score.
As with Tuesday night’s win over Longwood, Carolina struck early and often. All seven of UNC’s runs came in the first four innings, with a Danny Serretti RBI double opening the scoring in the first. After Winthrop answered with a run in the top of the second, DH Alberto Osuna blasted a two-run home run, his second of the year, to dead center field in the bottom of the frame. Angel Zarate and Tomas Frick followed up Osuna’s bomb with RBI knocks to make it a four-run inning for the Tar Heels. It’s the fourth time this season Carolina has scored at least four runs in a single inning.
The bats stayed active in the third, as the red-hot Johnny Castagnozzi lifted a no-doubt blast to left field that struck the Boshamer Stadium scoreboard on its way down. Castagnozzi finished 2-4 Wednesday, and is now batting .452 this season. Zarate, whose average is sitting at a not-too-shabby .394, drove in Honeycutt with an RBI single in the fourth after Honeycutt reached third with his first triple of the season. Carolina’s top three hitters of Honeycutt, Zarate and Frick combined to go 5-12 with three RBI, five runs scored and two walks. Each of them are batting .355 or better this season.
Head coach Scott Forbes dug deep into his bullpen against the Eagles, using a total of eight pitchers. Will Sandy got the start, but it was Nik Pry who earned the win with three innings of relief after Sandy was pulled. UNC’s final four pitchers (Shawn Rapp, Caleb Cozart, Gage Gillian and Caden O’Brien) combined for 2.1 innings of 1-hit relief to close out the game.
UNC’s 8-1 start is its best through nine games since the 2019 season. The team will attempt to stay hot this weekend as Coastal Carolina visits Boshamer Stadium for a three-game series. UNC lost its last meeting with Chanticleers, 6-3, in 2021. The first game is scheduled for Friday at 4 p.m.
