R.J. Davis scored 23 points and became UNC’s all-time leader in made three-pointers on Sunday night as the Tar Heels rolled over Campbell 97-81 at the Smith Center.

Davis’ second made three of the night was the 300th of his decorated career, nosing him past former record-holder Marcus Paige’s 299. Paige, of course, was there to see his record broken, having served as an assistant coach for the past two seasons.

“I grew up watching Marcus,” Davis said. “So for me to pass him and him hand me the torch, it’s a real moment… I really do appreciate him for the past two years of mentoring me and being in my corner.”

Davis finished the game with five made threes, a season high in a single game for the All-American. Freshman guard Ian Jackson, starting in place of Seth Trimble – who missed the game due to an upper-body injury – led the Tar Heels with 26 points. Jackson is the 10th UNC freshman ever to score at least 24 points in consecutive games, joining a list which includes Cole Anthony, Coby White, Harrison Barnes and Tyler Hansbrough. Elliot Cadeau finished with 12 points and a career-high 12 assists.

“I just wanted 10. I didn’t really want 12,” Cadeau said. “When I had nine, I told my teammates, ‘When I pass it to you, you’ve gotta shoot it.'”

Campbell’s sophomore forward Colby Duggan led all scorers with 32 points, the most by any opposing player against UNC this season. The Camels shot just 31.4 percent from the field in the first half, but shot a red-hot 17-28 (60.7 percent) in the second. Campbell finished the game making seven of its final eight shots, six of which were threes. It cut a Carolina lead which had been as large as 82-53 down to the final 16-point margin.

“That’s not sustainable,” UNC head coach Hubert Davis said of the defensive performance in the second half. “For us to be able to have success moving forward, not only do we have to become a good defensive and rebounding team, but it has to be consistent as well.”

With the win, Carolina improves to 8-5 overall after finishing non-conference play. The Tar Heels will be back in action when it visits Louisville on New Year’s Day at 6 p.m.
