The brand new XFL– a spring football league started by WWE chairman and CEO Vince McMahon–got started on Saturday afternoon with a game in Washington D.C. between the D.C. Defenders and the Seattle Dragons.

Although the Defenders got on the board first with a field goal, the Dragons answered later in the first quarter with the first touchdown in league history–a 14-yard pass from quarterback Brandon Silvers to former UNC receiver Austin Proehl.

Proehl joined the XFL after previously being a seventh-round NFL draft choice by the Buffalo Bills in 2018. After being waived by Buffalo, he also had short stints on the practice squads of both the Los Angeles Rams and the Tennessee Titans.

As a Tar Heel from 2014-2017, Proehl caught 91 passes for 1,265 yards and five touchdowns.
