For 80 minutes at Dorrance Field in Chapel Hill, it looked like the UNC men’s soccer team would see a reprise of their frustrating draw against VCU earlier in the season. Against Campbell Tuesday night, Carolina had outshot the Camels 8-0 late into the second half, but the score remained 0-0. That is, until junior Cameron Fisher corralled a long pass inside the 18-yard box and connected beautifully off the bounce, sending it past the Camels keeper and into the back of the net.

Fisher’s winner proved to be the difference in the tightly-contested match, a 1-0 victory for the Tar Heels.

Looking to bounce back from their rough defeat against Pittsburgh last week, Carolina peppered the Campbell net with shots throughout the evening, including a try from sophomore defender Aldair Sanchez in the 48th minute that smacked against the goal post.

Freshman Tega Ikoba sent a point-blank shot perilously wide in the 67th minute, another sign that it just might not be the Tar Heels’ night. Ikoba’s shot was the closest Carolina would get to a score until Fisher’s goal in the 82nd minute broke the scoreless tie. Fisher’s goal gives him three on the season, tying him with Ernest Bawa for the team lead, and sending him into first on the team in points, by virtue of his two assists this year.

The Tar Heel defense starred all night, not allowing a single shot from the Camels all evening after letting four goals past them against Pitt.

Carolina will have five days to rest before their biggest home match of the season: a visit from No. 12 Duke Sunday night at 7 p.m.
