After a frustrating draw with VCU that saw the UNC men’s soccer team take 50 shots and only score once, Friday night’s victory brought much-needed relief. The No. 5 Tar Heels throttled Georgia Southern at Dorrance Field in a decisive 3-0 final.

Carolina waited until the final minutes of the first half to break the scoreless deadlock. A foul on junior forward Jonathan Jimenez set up a free kick just outside the 18-yard box for sophomore midfielder Ernest Bawa. Bawa continued his strong start to the year, gorgeously curling in the free kick past the Eagles goalkeeper. It was Bawa’s third goal in just three games.

There were chances aplenty for the Tar Heels in the second half, but none found the back of the net until graduate forward Garit Wintermeyer knocked in his first goal in a UNC shirt on a cross from teammate Cameron Fisher in the 75th minute.

Fisher took on finishing duties himself for Carolina’s third goal in the 86th minute, barely having to move his boot to score after a rocket of a cross from Bawa. It was a clinical finish to cap off a clinical Carolina victory.

Head coach Carlos Somoano’s team will make its first road trip of the season on Labor Day, making the journey down I-85 to visit Davidson in a challenging matchup. The Wildcats already have a ranked win on the season, defeating No. 24 High Point earlier in August.
