Stanford’s Jaylen Blakes made a mid-range jumper with 1.5 seconds left to give the Cardinal a 72-71 win against UNC in Chapel Hill on Saturday afternoon. It’s Carolina’s first ever loss against Stanford in 14 games and snaps a season-long four-game winning streak for the Tar Heels.
“We made too many little mistakes throughout the entire game that put us in this situation,” head coach Hubert Davis said afterward.
Blakes’s shot came after Seth Trimble had made a pair of free throws with 7.7 seconds remaining to put UNC ahead 71-70. Trimble had also made a go-ahead layup with 1:37 to go to give UNC a 69-68 lead. But the night didn’t end well for the junior guard, as Trimble was guarding Blakes on Stanford’s final play, which saw the Duke transfer take a pass from teammate Maxime Raynaud, sprint the length of the floor and make a step-back jumper against Carolina’s ace defender.
“I don’t think our effort was all the way up where it should’ve been,” Trimble said. “The little details, knowing our scout, knowing what they do… we didn’t lock in on that today.”
The Tar Heels led by as many as seven points in the first half, but the game tightened up as Stanford closed the half strong, cutting the lead to 36-35 at halftime. UNC led 44-39 early in the second before an 18-8 Cardinal run flipped the script; Stanford led 57-52. Carolina responded with a 14-5 spurt to take a 66-61 lead with 4:23 remaining, but the Tar Heels managed only five more points in the final minutes.
“Our focus to detail, that wasn’t there,” R.J. Davis said. “Sometimes we relax a little bit. We have a lead, we see the score and take our foot off the gas a little bit.”
Davis led the Tar Heels with 19 points, while freshman star Ian Jackson struggled from the field: he made just one shot and scored only six points. Stanford’s Raynaud led all scorers with 25 points and added 13 rebounds. Blakes finished with 20 points.
The loss drops Carolina to 12-7 overall and 5-2 in ACC play. The Tar Heels will be back in action when they visit Wake Forest in Winston-Salem on Tuesday at 9 p.m.
