The UNC men’s soccer team scratched out a tough victory over visiting VCU Tuesday night in Chapel Hill, using a goal in the 82nd minute to win 1-0.

A concerted offensive effort finally paid off when Akeim Clarke headed in a cross from Milo Garvanian at point-blank range. The goal is Clarke’s second of the season and gave Garvanian his team-leading third assist.

It was one of 16 shots the Tar Heels fired against the Rams, five of which went on goal. VCU had only a single shot to its name, though that shot did force UNC goalkeeper Andrew Cordes to make a save in the 89th minute to preserve the victory. An open header off a desperation free kick went straight into the redshirt freshman’s gloves. Cordes’ effort secured his sixth clean sheet of the season and second in a row.

Tuesday marked the first time the Tar Heels had won consecutive matches since the first two of the season in August. Carolina is now 6-3-2 overall, and faces a four-match road trip over the next two weeks. That road trip begins with a visit to NC State Friday night at 8 p.m., in a match which will be broadcast on ACC Network. UNC will then visit Elon, in a match which was rescheduled from its original date of October 4 due to Hurricane Ian.
