A Lucas Ross goal in the 87th minute helped the UNC men’s soccer team avoid its first defeat of 2024 and salvage a 2-2 draw with St. John’s at Dorrance Field on Friday night.
Carolina had trailed since the 54th minute, when the Red Storm used one of their three total shots to take a 2-1 lead. The Tar Heels controlled possession – holding an 8-3 advantage in total shots, 5-2 advantage in shots on goal and 4-0 edge in corner kicks – but had to settle for the tie.
Luke Hille followed up his two-goal outing against East Tennessee State with the opening goal to give Carolina the lead in the 14th minute, but St. John’s answered in the 31st to equalize at 1-1. The match stayed level until the Red Storm broke through again in the second half.
UNC is 3-0-2 through five matches and will open ACC play on Friday, September 13 when the team visits Duke in Durham at 7 p.m.
