The North Carolina High School Athletic Association has released the new calendar for the 2020-21 sports year, the biggest change being that high school football will not be played this fall.

A vote by the NCHSAA Board of Directors on Tuesday evening pushed football until February 2021 but allowed other sports like cross-country and volleyball to continue this fall. The high school football season will begin on February 8, with the first date of competition scheduled for February 26.

All seasons have been shortened due to the coronavirus pandemic. Football will only play seven games, while a vast majority of other sports will play 14 games. Aside from football, all sports are limited to two games per week.

The release of the fall sports calendar comes as many school districts in North Carolina vote to operate online for the beginning of the semester amid the pandemic.

Last month, Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools elected to extend online learning until January 2021. Orange County and Chatham County Schools are operating online for the first nine weeks of the semester as well.

The fall sports season in North Carolina was scheduled to begin on August 1, but the NCHSAA postponed organized activities until September 1. Sports were then postponed again after Governor Roy Cooper extended Phase 2 of North Carolina’s reopening until at least September 11.
