A group of four former Tar Heels were elected Monday into the second class of the North Carolina High School Track & Field and Cross Country Hall of Fame.

Olympians Jim Beatty and Joan Nesbit Mabe join Dr. DeAnne Davis Brooks and Karen Godlock in earning this honor, with all four inductees set to be at the induction ceremony in Winston-Salem on Feb. 1.

Beatty (UNC Class of 1957) was an Olympian in 1960 and became the first man to run a mile in less than four minutes. He was also the recipient of the 1962 James E. Sullivan Award, which is given annually to the nation’s top amateur athlete.

A part of UNC’s Class of 1984, Nesbit was the first Tar Heel to be named an All-American in cross country, indoor track and outdoor track. To this day, she still holds the UNC record in both the outdoor 3,000 meters and the 10,000 meters.

Davis (Class of 2000) was a four-time ACC Champion performer in the triple jump and hurdle events, who was also a three-time All-American in the triple jump.

Godlock, meanwhile, graduated UNC in 1997 after an illustrious career in which she won three straight ACC Cross Country Championships (1994, 1995 & 1996) and was the first woman to accomplish the feat. In addition, she also was a three-time All-American.
