UNC named former assistant coach Mike Schall as the new head coach of the volleyball program Wednesday morning. Schall had been on former head coach Joe Sagula’s bench for the last five seasons before Sagula’s retirement in January.

“It is an honor to be selected as the next head coach at The University of North Carolina,” Schall said. “When I began my coaching journey, I did not know where it would lead. I look forward to continuing the work we have started in building championship teams on a consistent basis at Carolina.”

According to a statement from UNC Athletics, Schall was “involved in all aspects of the program, including the recruitment of two top-15 recruiting classes.”

Schall graduated from Penn State and began his coaching career there, spending 12 years on the Nittany Lions’ bench. During his tenure, Penn State advanced to the Final Four five times and won a national championship in 1999. Even after Schall left the program, Penn State continued to succeed, winning four consecutive national titles with players Schall recruited.

Since then, Schall has founded the Revolution Volleyball Club in Pennsylvania and become associate director of the Triangle Volleyball Club in 2011. He also served as the head coach of the club while serving as the primary recruiting contact for players and coaches. He joined the UNC program in February of 2018.

“Mike understands and embraces Carolina’s commitment to winning on and off the court, and his belief in developing both athletes and students makes him a terrific choice for this position,’’ said UNC athletic director Bubba Cunningham. “He is a strong leader and knows how to recruit and develop talent and teams, which will be a huge benefit to the future of Carolina volleyball.”
