In a recent workshop — I love doing in-person Creativity workshops and if you have an organization that would benefit from one please contact me — I was reminded how Being Intentionally Creative is absolutely the First Principle of a Creative Mindset. Since we are born with remarkable creative qualities all it takes is for you to embrace that you are creative, that it is core to your nature, and your creativity grows.
Now bring your Intentionality to these easy to integrate activities and your creativity grows even faster.
Walk. To get into your most creative brain you want the left hemisphere — the logical and the analytical — dancing with the right hemisphere, the imaginative and nonlinear. That’s your most creative state and that happens naturally as you walk, and even more completely when you walk on uneven ground, like in the woods. About five minutes into the walk, it’s happening and the latency effect is strong.
Another way to get your two hemispheres integrated is to systematically cross your vertical plane:
Stand up, touch your left shoulder with your right hand, and pat it three times. Then touch your right shoulder with your left hand, and pat it three times. Then your right hand to your right knee for three pats, your left hand to your right knee for three pats.
Repeat that cycle three times, and maybe have some fun with it, find a beat and get some rhythm going. I do this every morning right before I….
Stare at Green for 30 seconds. I wrote an earlier column on how research finds a remarkable improvement in your creative performance after staring at Green for 20 to 30 seconds.
Draw something upside down. Find a photo of a face and place it on the table so it is upside down, and draw what you see. This smashes the status quo workings of your brain.
