As a freshman, Erin Matson won the ACC Offensive Player of the Year award. As a sophomore, she did it again. As a junior, she did it again. And as a senior in 2021… well, you get the idea.

Matson took home the honor for the fourth consecutive season Wednesday, becoming just the second player in the history of the ACC to win the award four times. Matson was just a day removed from winning the conference’s Offensive Player of the Week award for the fourth time this season. Even after missing three games due to an injury, Matson still led the country in goals (21) and points (50). Her eight assists were also best in the ACC. She led Carolina to a 9-4 record in the games she played.

In addition to Matson, two other Tar Heels were named to All-ACC teams: senior midfielder Cassie Sumfest to the first team and senior forward Meredith Sholder to the second team. Sumfest is third on the team in points with 15 this season, while her 25 shots on goal are second only to Matson. Sholder’s 867 minutes played this season are most on the team, with Sumfest not too far behind at 847.

Matson, Sumfest and Sholder will be back in action for Carolina tonight when they face off against Wake Forest in Syracuse, N.Y., in the first round of the ACC Tournament. UNC is the No. 3 seed in the field.
