The honors keep rolling in for star UNC quarterback Drake Maye. After his 363-yard performance in a 41-10 win over Virginia Tech last Saturday in which he accounted for five total touchdowns, Maye was named the ACC Quarterback and Rookie of the Week, a member of the Davey O’Brien Award Great 8 and a Manning Award Star of the Week. It’s the second time Maye has won the quarterback award, and the third time he’s won the rookie award.

Maye is responsible for 22 total touchdowns this season and has thrown just one interception. His passing yards (1,594), passing touchdowns (19) and QBR (90.6) all rank in the nation’s top six, with his touchdowns mark tied for first.

“He continues to impress us with everything he does,” head coach Mack Brown said of Maye Monday morning. “And he can still get better.”

Maye’s 363 passing yards against the Hokies on Saturday were a career high for the redshirt freshman, eclipsing his mark of 352 yards against App State earlier this season. He has topped 300 yards in three of his five games, and has not thrown for fewer than 284 in any game this year.

Maye has also shown off his running ability this season, tying his career high with 13 rushes against the Hokies and setting a career high with two scores. He is averaging 4.9 yards per rush this season, though it is important to remember that in college football sacks count against a quarterback’s rushing totals. Maye has been sacked nine times this season, but did not go down against Virginia Tech’s top-10 defense.

Maye and the Tar Heels will be back in action this Saturday at 4 p.m. when they visit Miami. The game will be broadcast on ESPN2.
