After each player put up big numbers in UNC’s wins at Virginia and Wake Forest, UNC redshirt freshman quarterback Drake Maye and junior receiver Josh Downs were each named ACC performers of the week at their positions.

For Maye, it is the fifth and sixth time this season he has won ACC Quarterback of the Week. He put together another strong performance against the Cavaliers, accounting for 367 total yards and three touchdowns. Through the air, Maye completed 26 of 37 passes for 293 yards and two scores, while also amassing 74 yards and a touchdown with his legs. Against Wake Forest, he was even better: a career-high 519 total yards (including 448 through the air, itself a career-high) and five total touchdowns. Maye’s 448 passing yards are the fourth-most in a game in UNC history and the most ever in the history of Wake Forest’s Truist Field. His 519 total yards are third-most in UNC single-game history.

Downs’ 15 receptions at Virginia were a career high, one shy of UNC’s single-game record and the most by any ACC receiver this season. His 166 receiving yards were a season high, and Downs also added 57 yards on two punt returns. Downs stayed hot against Wake, reeling in 11 passes for 154 yards and a career-high three touchdowns. He is the team leader in catches, receiving yards and touchdowns this season.

Maye, Downs and the rest of the Tar Heels will be back in action this Saturday when they host Georgia Tech at 5:30 p.m.
