The UNC football team will be under the brightest lights possible in Week 1. The program announced on Monday afternoon that its 2023 season opener against South Carolina in Charlotte will be the featured game on ESPN’s signature college football show, “College GameDay.”

College GameDay was first broadcast on campus or neutral site locations in 1993. Since then, the Tar Heels have only played in two of the show’s featured games: in 1997 against Florida State in Chapel Hill and in 2010 against LSU in Atlanta. Both resulted in UNC losses.

Kickoff against South Carolina in Charlotte is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 2. ABC will broadcast the game to a national audience. According to its website, College GameDay will set up in Romare Bearden Park in Charlotte and will broadcast live from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. the day of the game.

UNC will look to avenge a loss to the Gamecocks in Charlotte at the end of the 2022 season. South Carolina manhandled the Tar Heels 38-21 in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl. The last regular season game between the two schools — also played in Charlotte in Week 1 — resulted in a UNC win. The Tar Heels overcame a 20-9 second-half deficit to beat the Gamecocks 24-20. It was the first game for then-freshman quarterback Sam Howell and the first win of head coach Mack Brown’s second tenure.
