“I’m also a professor at UNC and I run Blue Sky Innovations, which is the lab that started where we do emerging technologies,” said King. “So, AI, virtual reality, augmented reality robotics. In that, we had some really interesting technologies we were building for virtual reality that also had implications for robotics. So, Blue Sky Robotics is a company that makes software that makes robotic arms more intuitive, more intelligent and able to solve greater problems because they can actually see and understand their environment.”

As the boundaries of technology push further and faster, there is a level of focus and intention required to enact specific change and development. While the robots associated with Blue Sky Robotics may not exactly be the stuff of science fiction just yet, they are designed to fulfill specific purposes.

“The majority of our work is around the robotic arm that you might see in manufacturing or warehouse or, now, even in hospitals,” said King. “It’s a very valuable, useful tool. It’s not the humanoid robot that everyone likes to talk about, but we see much more value in these task-oriented robots.”
