Any one of my friends will tell you – I’m always the person looking for a new beauty or wellness trend to refresh my look and boost my self-confidence. This has meant everything from trying a yoga class that took a fast turn for the weird, or laying motionless for 90 minutes while someone glued individual fake eyelashes to my eyes. I routinely give myself permission to indulge in self-care, and I wholeheartedly believe you should too. This column is meant to not only be an exploration of fun & trendy things to try in our local community, but also a reminder that you deserve to take time for yourself as well.
As I mentioned, I used to get eyelash extensions every two weeks. While this provides a very noticeable difference to your look, and can potentially take time off your morning routine, it’s expensive, a big time commitment, and can potentially cause long-term damage to your eyelashes. This led me to Monarch Brow & Facial Studio to try a “Eyelash Lift and Tint” and now (sorry in advance for this joke) my eyes have been opened to how amazing this service is!
A lash lift is basically a perm for your eyelashes. From Monarch’s website:

When you enter Monarch Brow & Facial Studio and meet Angela Hugghins, Monarch’s Owner, a wave of relaxation rushes over you, and you instantly know you’re literally in good hands. The space is quiet, approachable, and most importantly – clean & bright! You are able choose how “dramatic” you want your curl to be before you start. If humans had factory settings, mine would be “dramatic,” so that is the look I went with.
Even for the most seasoned professionals, any treatment on your eyes feels a bit odd. In my opinion, if you’ve ever had your eyebrows waxed or threaded, you can handle a lash lift. Angela tells you everything she’s doing before she does it and provides an incredibly gentle touch throughout the treatment. When the “lift” part is over, it takes about 5 minutes to “tint” your lashes. I have a naturally dark brown hair, but I imagine if you have lighter hair & eyelashes, the tint is going to be what really seals the deal for you.
I know that everyone’s expectations with self-care investments are different. I’ll be using the “Self-Care Scale” in each edition of Glowing Review, so you can choose what to try based on what matters the most to you.
Experience: “Lash Lift & Tint” at Monarch Brow &Facial Studio
Relaxation Level: 6. The space is very relaxing and private, and since I’m more conditioned to these types of experiences, I was actually able to drift off during my appointment. However, there’s an adjustment required any time someone is touching you near your eyes. If the idea of someone’s fingers near your face makes you squirmy, this may not be for you.
Painful Meter: Zero. No part of this treatment was painful.
External Results: 9. My mascara goes on smoother and my eyes look brighter. With Summer fast approaching, I really love the idea of putting on some tinted moisturizer and a quick layer of mascara and feeling like no one is going to tell me I “look tired” that day. Side bar: please stop telling women they look tired. We are.
I’m not quite ready to throw away all of my mascara, but having my lashes lifted gave my eyes the refresh I was looking for. Set aside some time for yourself and give a lash lift at Monarch Brow & Facial Studio a try. It lasts up to 8 weeks, and your friends haven’t seen your face in person in a year. Don’t do it for them though, do it for you. There is no better investment than the one you make in yourself.
