Chatham Park Check-in: Greenways, Trails and Pocket Parks

The Chatham Park Check-In continues with the next series of interviews, this edition again led by Preston Development Executive Vice President Vanessa Jenkins!

Join in on a conversation with chief engineer Chuck Smith and project manager Jake Smith (no relation) of Preston Development along with Kurt Pfeifer of WithersRavenel landscape architects about the planning and implementation of greenways, trails and pocket parks and public open spaces at the 8,000-acre development in Chatham County.

Chuck Smith is a veteran landscape architect who has been involved with the design of multiple parks in North Carolina and other states. Pfeifer, a long-time colleague of Chuck Smith, joins the team that has designed the infrastructure of parks prior to construction of homes and neighborhoods.

Jake Smith works with the town of Pittsboro in designing parks, trails and greenways, some of which are already open to the public, as well as residents of Chatham Park.

“There are a lot of trends in the master plan that the town has already identified as in need,” Pfeifer said. “We look at the overall land plan and try to provide some kind of recreation space to every single aspect of the neighborhood within, say, a quarter-mile or five-minute walk,” from sports team use to special needs parks.

“Greenways are a great area for relaxation and walking,” Jake Smith said. “They have benches and shade, which is obviously at a premium in North Carolina.”
