In the wake of historic rains and floods brought on by Tropical Depression Chantal, many in the Orange County community are in need of help — and many of their peers are looking for ways to help.
Some residents and small businesses launched their own fundraisers in the aftermath, which people can seek out. Chapelboro has curated a list of drives, fundraisers and donation links primarily driven by established institutions or grassroots efforts by community organizations.
Here are some of the flood relief and response efforts:
The Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina is currently accepting donations on its website. It is also setting up an emergency distribution site at the New Home and Durham Food Pantry in Northern Durham at 6611 Guess Road on July 15 at 9:30 a.m.
Triangle Mutual Aid is accepting donations at several locations around the Triangle, including at Back Alley Bikes, located at 100 Boyd Street in downtown Carrboro. To see donation locations and a list of requested supplies, click here.
The local governments of Chapel Hill, Carrboro, Hillsborough and Orange County are accepting donations through a dedicated ‘community giving fund’ to help multiple areas of their operations and the communities impacted. The Orange County Arts Commission suffered extensive damage at its headquarters in the Eno Arts Mill building. To donate to restoration efforts, click here.
The Chamber for a Better Chapel Hill/Carrboro will be hosting a Flood Relief Resource Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, July 17 at the Innovate Carolina Junction building, located at 136 East Rosemary Street in downtown Chapel Hill. To learn more about the event or to RSVP, click here.
The Haw River Assembly has set up a Resilience and Recovery Fund, which will supply lab equipment, well testing kits and clean-up tools for the Haw River Watershed. Donations of $10 or more are requested. Click here to donate.
The Carolina Center for Public Service has compiled a comprehensive list of donation and volunteer opportunities, including with Habitat for Humanity, the Diaper Bank of North Carolina and the Haw River Assembly. Click here to browse the list.
