UNC Chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz received a high honor on Tuesday.

The university announced the National Athletic Trainers’ Association selected Guskiewicz for its Hall of Fame on Tuesday afternoon. Guskiewicz, who has spent more than 20 years studying sports-related brain injuries and concussions at UNC, will be inducted during the organization’s annual clinical symposium and exposition in Atlanta.

During his time at UNC, Guskiewicz established the Center for Retired Athletes, served as the co-director of the Matthew Gfeller Sport-Related Traumatic Brain Injury Research Center and received a MacArthur Fellowship for his work on sports-related concussions. His work influenced how concussions are treated and diagnosed in the NFL and NCAA, with the NFL awarding a grant to Guskiewicz’s center in 2018 for the study of CTE.

The university selected Guskiewicz as its interim chancellor in early 2019 after he served as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences for three years. He was named UNC’s 12th chancellor in December.

National Athletic Trainers’ Association is a professional membership association for certified athletic trainers and was founded in 1950. According to its website, the group has grown to more than 45,000 members worldwide today.

The induction ceremony to honor Guskiewicz will be in June.
