A UNC student has tested positive for active tuberculosis, the university announced late Friday.

Officials said in an Alert Carolina message that the student was “no longer on campus and has submitted to home isolation.” The message to the campus community said that “a small number of individuals” may have been exposed to this student and that the university is working with the Orange County Health Department to “contact these individuals and ensure that they receive appropriate testing and, if necessary, treatment.”

Officials say TB generally develops over weeks and months and individuals are only at risk if they come into contact with someone who has TB. The disease is completely curable with medications.

Members of the campus community with questions are directed to contact Campus Health Services at (919) 966-6573 or the University Employee Occupational Health Clinic at (919) 966-9119.
