This semester, UNC is launching a pilot project within Davis Library which will establish three types of study zones. The building’s eight floors will be designated according to “expected noise level,” according to the university.

The first floor and part of the second floor facing Hamilton Hall will be designated as a “Collaborative Study Zone.” This means the zone is meant for talk at a conversational volume and group work.

The side of the second floor facing the Student Union and the third, fourth, fifth, seventh and eighth floors will be designated as “Considerate Study Zones.” UNC describes these types of zones as “well-suited for anyone seeking a quieter place to study and work, but one in which low-volume conversation is acceptable.

The sixth floor of Davis Library will be designated as the “Silent Study Zone,” and is designed for absolute quiet.

Davis Library is one of three main libraries on campus. On weeknights, the library opens at 8 a.m. and closes at 2 a.m., with adjusted hours on weekends. The House Undergraduate Library is open from 8 a.m. through 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday with adjusted hours on Friday and Sunday. The building is closed on Saturday.

Wilson Library at Polk Place is open 9 a.m. through 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and is closed on weekends. The library was the scene of a scare last week, as elevated levels of lead in the water forced the university to remove several drinking fountains from the facility.
