The UNC Board of Trustees reaffirmed their long-term goals for the university at last week’s meeting.
At their full board meeting last Thursday, the board announced their election of officers for this year. Chair Haywood Cochrane and vice chair Chuck Duckett were re-elected for their second terms at the same position.
Following these announcements, Cochrane took time to establish the board’s goals for the upcoming year and beyond. They include maintaining a beneficial relationship with Chancellor Carol Folt and following the recent strategic plan created for UNC.
“We will first and foremost continue to support Carol and her team as they implement the university’s strategic framework,” said Cochrane. “We have to identify metrics, so we can be held accountable for our performance against the strategic framework goals, and we need to set additional goals for the competition of educational and other specific aims.”
Cochrane said the board’s goals also include encouraging informed public discussions across the university, improving research across the nation and furthering UNC’s ongoing Campaign for Carolina.
Following the meeting, Folt also reaffirmed her goals for the next phase of her chancellorship at UNC. She said she is focused on what happens now since the school’s capital campaign is underway.
“The exciting part of this next phase,” said Folt, “is taking all the work we did getting ready with the strategic plan and campaign launch, and now doing the hard work of implementing it.”
Although Folt expects this to take years to complete, she says she’s ready to see people manifest their ideas for the university.
“Every project we have needs to go from the phase of ‘thinking about it’ to ‘doing it,’” she said. “A lot of what I think we’re going to see in the next couple years is the launching, the implementation and the metrics of these great ideas as we put them to practice.”
The board’s next scheduled meeting will be September 26.
