At the UNC Board of Trustees meeting Thursday, the group discussed an increase in student tuition and fees in the 2020-2021 school year.

The board unanimously passed the suggestion from the Finance, Infrastructure and Audit committee, which included suggestions for other items in addition to the tuition and fees change.

Under the proposed plan, tuition for undergraduate students would increase by 3 percent, which would be a $211 increase for in-state students and a $1,026 increase for non-North Carolina residents. Both in-state and non-resident graduate students would see a $317 increase. In fees, slight increases were included for student health, BeAM enhancement, Campus Recreation, and Carolina Union fees. The total increase would be less than $33.

Interim Chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz spoke about the methods to determine and discuss the increases, saying he is proud of the process.

“Our students have a voice at the table as these decisions are being made,” said Guskiewicz. “As you know, we aspire to have the most accessible and affordable education provided to the students of Carolina. We have not had a tuition increase in three years and this would be a modest three percent. Our students have weighed in and I’m pleased with the process.”

All requests approved at the trustees’ meeting on Thursday will need to be approved by the Board of Governors before being enacted. Its next meeting is scheduled for December 13.
