UNC-Chapel Hill interim chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz and members of the university’s faculty embarked on a three-day bus tour across the state aimed at interacting with North Carolinians.

“We are about to leave for an amazing journey,” Guskiewicz told faculty members before departing from the Friday Center in Chapel Hill on Wednesday, “and I want to start by just thanking all of you for saying yes to this.”

Guskiewicz brought back the Tar Heel Bus Tour for the first time since 2008. Faculty members and senior administrators boarded buses to travel across North Carolina, from the Blue Ridge Mountains to the coast of the state.

“We don’t quite know what to expect and we haven’t done this since 2008,” Guskiewicz said. “But we are organized. We’re ready to head out on three different buses. As you know, the last time we did this, we sent one bus out the week after Commencement with about 45 faculty and it was a week long journey.

“Now we’re gonna head out on three buses. We’re gonna travel over 1,600 miles. We’re going to stop in 28 different towns across North Carolina.”

Among the faculty on the Tar Heel Bus Tour is athletics director Bubba Cunningham, who traveled to New Bern.

“We’re about to go out and learn more about the towns and communities that our students call home and where we have an impact with our research and our engaged scholarship,” Guskiewicz said.

Guskiewicz and Carolina faculty members are set to return from the bus tour on Friday, where they will gather, hear stories and reflect on the trip.
